9:23 pm - spring
i'm still waiting for spring, like i don't believe it will actually come this year.

it is though, slowly, and every day i see the flowers blooming or the temperature rising, it's like a little surprise.

and this spring, it has such potential to be EXTRAORDINARY.

10:17 am - update
it's been awhile since i've updated on what i'm up to.

school is going SUPER well. i love my program and love what i am studying. i feel like i am in the right place and studying what i need to be studying. i am looking forward to my career and feel like i have a purpose.

additionally, i'm finding new hobbies are coming out of my career. i've been studying a lot of food policy and agricultural policy, and i'm realizing that i can't just talk the talk, i need to walk the walk. so i'm going to start trying to garden.

I KNOW. i never thought i'd be someone who would garden. but i'm gonna see how it works out.

i think i thought for a long time that i didn't have hobbies (besides obsessively following news and politics, but i don't think being exceptionally well informed is a hobby ;) so i'm happy that i'm sort of finding my place..

i have some cool trip(s) lined up for the next year so i'm happy about that.

i'm meeting a lot of new and interesting people.

things are good. the only thing that isn't good is the fact that i am completely broke and living off of student loans. but... eh. i'll get a job eventually and pay them back. i'm trying not to stress.

5:41 pm - wooohoooo
this is the last weekend of george bush's presidency!!

and i'm starting it off with a bang! happy hour, wii, then tomorrow meeting the newest member of the family, then my friend gets into town, then party, then STEELERS, then other friend gets to town, then PARTY, then INAUGURATION!!! (did i mention im' volunteering and have to be downtown by 5am?) then BIGGEST FUCKING PARTY EVER!

plus. i may be getting another internship position on top of the one i have, which means essentially 30 hours of non-school academic work a week, which is awesome yet will be very stressful and difficult but i think in the end worthwhile.

it might just be coming together.

9:54 am - hard times
you know, in dc, it doesn't really seem like this recession thing is happening. except that at the restaurant, it is a little slow.

but what i read online makes me really worried about things. it's like this giant feeling of doom hovering over everything.

i have no money but it's not related to the recession; it's related to the fact that i lived abroad for two years making pennies, essentially, came back to the US with a couple thousand in savings and promptly spent it on a computer, an iphone and some real essentials when i got back. i'm waiting on this loan to come through and then i'll feel a little more secure.

i'm not, at this point, worried about mortgaging my future with all these loans. it's what i need to do. i'd much rather be doing grad school at this point than trying to get a job. i'm worried for my brother who is graduating college in may. what does he think he's going to find? luckily for him he is in a frat (one of the best decisions he made in college, looking back on it) and hopefully he can find a job with his frat connections (he is also the pres of his chapter so that's good too). i'm thinking of doing a phd after this program, because it would make me more employable and keep me off the job market for another X amount of years.

i can't say i'm not worried because i am. the thing is, the baby boomers had it best, up until now. they won't be able to retire as comfortably, but the way it's looking, my generation might never be able to retire.

the whole mindset of this country needs to be shifted from individualistic ME ME ME to something thats more community based. something where we consider the needs of everyone and not just the few. i've been able to recognize, over the past year (especially in africa) that i am EXTREMELY lucky, me and my family. my parents own their house. i'm in school and can get loans. but there are a lot of people out there who aren't like us and who don't have that kind of security. it makes me worried and it doesn't seem like the people in charge are doing what they need to do (see republicans trying to break the UAW). maybe the union workers were making "too much money" but they were NOT the cause of detroit's collapse. those guys, the ones making 22 million dollars a year and flying in private jets, they were the ones who lead to this in their refusal to create cars that americans would want to buy. i've never driven american and at this rate i don't intend to. where are the american hybrid cars?

i had a dream last night about people sleeping outside, homeless. it's haunted me.

10:29 am - i'm going to be in school forever
i've decided that i am going to be in school for the next 6+ years as i think i want to pursue, after this degree, the PhD in Sustainable Development at Columbia.

Here's why. It's an awesome degree, blending environmental sciences, social sciences, development studies and economics. And, it's at Columbia, where many of my readers know, I've been wanting to go since I was 17.

Now I have a goal in mind for the next two years. I now need to figure out the best way to achieve it.

9:35 am - another horrifying video
seriously what is wrong with people? having a middle name of hussein doesn't equal terrorist. being black doesn't equal terrorist. having an associate who USED to be a terrorist but has been/ is now well regarded in the Education scene of Chicago doesn't equal terrorist.

clearly, there are some people still living in a NON reality based world. sad.

3:11 pm - uhhhhhh what?
“I’m looking forward to meeting him, too,’’ she said. “I’ve never met him before, but I’ve been hearing about his Senate speeches since I was in, like, second grade.’’

“I have to admit, though, he’s a great debater, and he looks pretty doggone confident, like he’s sure he’s going to win,’’ Ms. Palin, 44, said of Mr. Biden, 65. “But then again, this is the same Senator Biden who said the other day that University of Delaware would trounce the Ohio State Buckeyes. Wrong!”

the more i read about this, THE ANGRIER I GET

2:24 pm - palin
the choice of palin is so insulting to women.

if there is a woman out there who is willing to vote for mccain/palin simply because she is a woman, without thinking about her politics, it is a disgrace.

this is a woman who is anti-choice. she wants creationism taught in schools. she wants to drill, in a move that will NOT bring down oil prices in the short term and will only POSSIBLY have an effect in the long term.

it is an insult. this does NOT shatter the glass ceiling. if she becomes VP, it is TOKEN. and when it becomes evident that she is not up to the job, middle america will think it's because "women" aren't up to the job. if he wanted a woman, why didn't he pick Olympia Snowe, or Condi Rice or or or some other woman who is actually qualified with real experience and a MASTER's DEGREE?! (palin has a BA in journalism...)

And let's not even get into the issues of her kids. Not there's anything wrong with having young children in the white house, but it just doesn't seem good judgement to have an infant there, let alone an infant with special needs.

this is really pissing me off.

8:55 am - woman in the white house

when i said i wanted to see a woman in the white house,

i didn't mean

an inexperienced, pro-life, anti-science, soccer mom who has no idea about foreign policy or sensible energy policy and who happens to look like tina fey but is probably a lot less funny.
